Walking through the sacred grove was very special. They have benches all throughout so that you can sit and pray. It was so peaceful and beautiful and the feeling was so sacred that I felt the need to whisper.
I’ve been a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints my whole and visiting the Smith family farm was one of the coolest experiences I’ve had.
If you’re ever in the area, definitely set aside 1-2 hours and go visit!
The actual location of the most sacred site in the Mormon church. Mormon's believe that the 14 year old Joseph Smith was visited in this Grove of trees by God the Father and Jesus Christ. The farm and buildings are historically accurate restored buildings. The peaceful contemplative walk through the Grove is a moving experience.
Make no mistake, this is primarily a religious site for members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (LDS Church or Mormons) in addition to being a historic site. This site is comprised of a visitors center staffed with full-time Mormon missionaries, two restored structures Joseph Smith (the founder of the Mormon Church), and the "Sacred Grove," the site where Mormons believe Joseph Smith was personally visited by Jesus Christ and God the Father. It is a must see location for Mormons, but it also a place of significant historic interest. Because of the religious significance, the LDS Church was meticulously documented and restored the area. So it is a fine historical site and is beautifully maintained. For people who aren't Mormons, just know the guides will be talking at length about the religious significance of the place, but they regularly host non-LDS visitors and are gracious and respectful. As a Mormon, I enjoyed it greatly. Wonderful place to visit.
As a member of the LDS Church, this is a especially meaningful tour, but from a purely historic/secular standpoint it is fascinating to see the recreated and even original buildings that made up life in the early 1800s. It is also very interesting to see the humble birthplace of a religion that has blossomed into nearly 16 million global members.
The farm is immaculate, complete with vegetables growing in a carefully tended garden. The structures have been reestablished giving visitors the feeling of walking through time to the 1800s. Sister missionaries on hand to lead a tour or answer questions.
The missionary who took us on our tour did an excellent job telling stories and helping us feel closer to Joseph Smith, Jr.
